New York Battery and Energy Storage Technology Consortium

Energy storage is a vital technology solution for enabling sustainable energy use and to address climate change. The transition to a sustainable energy future requires bold and innovative action and solutions. NY-BEST seeks to promote energy storage through education and thought leadership; lead the development and deployment of energy storage solutions; and expand markets for energy storage by accelerating the widespread deployment of a broad range of energy storage solutions in the marketplace, and advancing innovation and commercialization of energy storage technologies and applications across stationary, mobile and transportation sectors.

MD Energy Innovation Institute logo

Maryland Energy Innovation Institute

The University of Maryland Energy Research Center provides a comprehensive balanced energy research program, based on the most efficient use of our natural resources, while minimizing environmental impacts and our dependence on imported energy with faculty expertise across a broad spectrum of energy technology and policy.

Labs

Argonne National Lab logo

Argonne National Laboratory

ANL is a multidisciplinary science and engineering research center, where talented scientists and engineers work together to answer the biggest questions facing humanity, from how to obtain affordable clean energy to protecting ourselves and our environment. Born out of the University of Chicago’s work on the Manhattan Project in the 1940s, Argonne's goal is to make an impact — from the atomic to the human to the global scale. Through multi-institutional collaborations in the U.S. and around the world, the lab strives to discover new ways to develop energy innovations and gain a deeper understanding of our planet, our climate and the cosmos.

ARL DEVCOM logo

ARL Energy Storage Laboratory

The Army, with its significant use of technology on the battlefield, relies on batteries that are often ponderous and potentially dangerous. Army operations require that batteries are placed in extreme thermal and mechanical conditions that can be detrimental to the batteries and potentially harmful to the Soldier. While significant research is being conducted on improving the energy density of batteries to reduce weight, there has been little focus on batteries used in extreme environments.

Centers

Maryland Nanocenter FabLab microscope

Maryland NanoCenter

The Maryland NanoCenter houses a class 10,000 cleanroom and FabLab, as well as a microscopy and characterization lab, AIM Lab. These facilities, located in the Jeong H. Kim Engineering building, allow easy access to external users to create and characterize their devices. Additionally, the NanoCenter incorporates partner labs to match users to shared-user facilities across campus.

NIST Center for Neutron Research

Located at NIST's main campus in Gaithersburg, Maryland, the NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) focuses it's research on providing neutron measurement capabilities to the U.S.
